A mid-afternoon blaze tore through three homes in Paterson on March 20th, leaving 18 people homeless, but causing no serious injuries.
A full assignment was dispatched at 3:39 for a report of a fire at 24 Chestnut Street. Several units reported smoke visible as they left quarters. A second alarm was transmitted on arrival for heavy fire in the rear of a 2 ½ story frame with extension to a similar on the #2 side and a much smaller 2 ½ story frame on the #4 side.
Flames quickly took possession of the buildings forcing command to switch firefighting to exterior operations. A third alarm was struck for manpower and for water supply. Streams hit the three structures from all sides, A tower ladder, a ladder pipe, and a deck gun worked the front of the structures with multiple handlines hitting from the sides and from a garage roof in the rear.
The fire was darkened down in less than two hours and was placed under control at about 6:00. One firefighter suffered a shoulder injury.
Special Thanks to Bill Tompkins for the above story.
