Flames ripped through two buildings and damaged a third as Jersey City firefighters battled the fire as well as almost 90 degree temperatures on May 31st.
Firefighters were initially dispatched just after 3:00 PM to 50 Belmont Ave for a report of a structure fire. On arrival, heavy fire was visible in the rear of 50 Belmont, a three story frame OMD, and 48 Belmont, a two story frame. A second alarm was transmitted on arrival and that was followed shortly by a third. Flames traveled up the rear of the buildings and soon had possession of the third floor and cockloft of the OMD.
A fourth alarm was transmitted as the heat began to take a toll on firefighters. Six firefighters were transported to Jersey City Medical Center, most due to heat exhaustion. One was transported after he ran out of air and had to be assisted by brother firefighters. No civilian injuries were reported.
The fire was brought under control shortly before 5:00. The cause is under investigation.
