A five alarm fire tore through three Union City buildings and damaged a fourth in the afternoon of June 8th, leaving almost two dozen homeless.

North Hudson Regional Fire Control dispatched a full assignment (N.H. Squad 2, Engines 1, 4, and 3, Ladders 1 and 2, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, and Safety 1) at 15:42 to 1911 Palisade Ave. for a report of a structure fire. First arriving units confirm a working fire and the working fire assignment was filled out (Squad 1, Squad 6 as the RIC Team and Deputy 1). Heavy fire was involving the rear of 1909 Palisade Ave. and was extending to 1911 and 1913. At 15:46 Acting Battalion 1 Chief Gonyou transmitted the second alarm bringing Engine 5, Squad 7, Ladder 3, and Battalion 2 to the scene.

The fire buildings were all two story frame structures separated by only a couple of feet. As the flames extended to include the cocklofts, Deputy 1 Chief Avillo transmitted a third alarm (Engine 9, Squad 10, Ladder 4, and Battalion 3) at 15:54, followed thirteen minutes later by a fourth alarm (Jersey City Engines 5 and 15, Ladder 11 and Battalion 3).

Several lines were stretched to the rear yards and soon had the heavy fire knocked down. Exposure lines were also able to keep the flames from extending further. Companies opened up and checked for extension. With the warm temperatures and members taking a beating, a fifth alarm was transmitted at 16:45 (Jersey City Engine 10, Ladder12, Deputy 1, and JCFD Chief of Department). The fire was finally able to be placed under control at about 17:30.

The cause is under investigation, but is believed to have started on a rear deck. An explosion, possibly from a propane tank was reported. Six families were left homeless by the fire, but no civilian injuries were reported. Two firefighters were transported to the hospital for minor injuries. Hoboken, Kearny, Harrison and Jersey City units relocated to cover the empty firehouses.
